Herb Brooks
(1937 - 2003) American Hockey Coach
Achievement:
Coached the 1980 U.S. ice hockey team to an upset Olympic gold medal,
famous as the Miracle on Ice.

Enabled his team to beat the feared Soviet team by putting them through
grueling conditioning exercises, which built not only stamina but team
spirit and a commitment to victory. During the medal rounds, rather
than allowing his players to rest, Brooks continued the harsh training
sessions that he had implemented upon forming the team.
Experience:
Brooks played ice hockey in high school, and continued to play at the
University of Minnesota. He also played on the 1964 and 1968 U.S. Olympic
teams. Prior to that, he had been the last member of the 1960 Olympic
team to be cut.
