Although he was ranked low in his Naval Academy class, he became an
elected official in 1981 in the U.S. House of Representative, Arizona
due to his competitiveness, popularity among his peers and established
connections created by his father and grandfather.
Notable:
Prisoner of War during Vietnam War who was tortured repeatedly but
decided to stay with the other soldiers even after he was offered the
opportunity of freedom.
Family:
Born in Panama Canal Zone as the son of Admiral John Sydney McCain,
Jr. Coming from a family of war veterans, he moved from place to place
during his formative years and sought stability in his later years.

United States Naval Academy, 1958 and National War College, 1974.
Married:
1965, he married Carol Shepp, a model from Pennsylvania.
They divorced in 1980 and he married Cindy Lou Hensley,
school teacher and heiress to a brewery fortune.
