Father in law, a prosperous banker and rancher, helped him start first store.

Creative Thinking; contrary to the thinking of his day, he believed that small rural towns could support a large discount store, and Wal-Mart was started in these rural towns.
Education:
He was the starting quarterback for his high school football team and led them to the state title in 1935. Sam majored in Economics at the University of Missouri

He met Helen Robson in April of 1942 and married her on February 14, 1943;
