Sam Walton

(1918 - 1992) Founder of Wal-Mart

Achievment: Founded, Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in the world, and a leader in discount retailing.

Achievements made possible by:

  • Sheer determination and relentless drive to succeed took him from being a poor small town boy to the richest man in the world.
  • Father in law, a prosperous banker and rancher, helped him start first store.
  • Creative Thinking; contrary to the thinking of his day, he believed that small rural towns could support a large discount store, and Wal-Mart was started in these rural towns.

Education: He was the starting quarterback for his high school football team and led them to the state title in 1935. Sam majored in Economics at the University of Missouri

Married: He met Helen Robson in April of 1942 and married her on February 14, 1943;
